With the help of the Hal and Charlie Peterson Foundation and San Angelo Health Foundation, the Sam B. Coffey Animal Shelter opened in the fall of 2004.

The shelter was given it's name in memory of "Brother" Sam Coffey. For thirty six years Bro. Sam served as the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Junction. He not only loved the people of Junction, he loved the animals as well. Bro. Sam would take extra food to the old shelter for the animals. In the cold months he would gather blankets to help keep them warm. This tradition is carried on each year by the First Baptist Church day care classes of three and four year olds. They come with donations of food, blankets, towels and even toys for the animals.

The shelter serves as an animal quarantine facility, takes in stray animals and has an adoption program. Unfortunately though, at times unhealthy, aggressive or unwanted animals must be euthanized.
